Drugstore.com
drugstore.com, inc. Offers $30 Store Credit to Offset
Cost of Medicare Discount Drug Cards; In-Store Credit on
OTC Purchases Given with Proof of Purchase of Discount
Card
BELLEVUE, Wash., May 11, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
drugstore.com, inc. (Nasdaq:DSCM), a leading online
retailer of health, beauty, vision, and pharmacy
products, today launched a special promotion designed to
offset the cost of the annual enrollment fee for most
Medicare-approved drug discount cards. Qualifying
seniors who register their Medicare discount drug card
at the drugstore.com™ Web site on or before July 30,
2004, will receive a $30 in-store credit that can be
applied to purchases of more than 18,000
over-the-counter products carried at the drugstore.com™
online store. Due to government restrictions, the credit
cannot be applied to the purchase of prescription
medications.
Seniors who have signed up for a Medicare drug discount
card can qualify for the credit by registering their
card at www.drugstore.com/drugcard or calling
1-800-drugstore (1-800-378-4786).
"As a leading provider of low-cost prescription drugs,
we are pleased to introduce additional benefits that
will help seniors," said Jeff Kimmell, a registered
pharmacist and vice president, healthcare services and
chief pharmacy officer of drugstore.com, inc. "With all
of the recent publicity about the Medicare discount
cards, we've received thousands of calls from seniors
looking for ways to lower their prescription drug costs.
As a result, we are offering our $30 in-store credit to
help seniors offset some of the initial costs of the
cards and to introduce them to the already low everyday
prices at the drugstore.com™ Web store."
An estimated 7 million Americans are expected to enroll
in the Medicare drug discount program. The government
estimates that approximately 4 million of these seniors
will qualify for a low-income credit of $600 and a
waiver of the annual enrollment fee. The remaining 3
million seniors will be required to pay an annual fee up
to $30 to participate in the discount card program,
depending on which card they select. The Medicare
discount card program goes into effect on June 1st.
To obtain the lowest prices for medications,
drugstore.com, inc. encourages Medicare cardholders to
comparison shop at its Website. The drugstore.com™
online pharmacy, which will accept many of the discount
cards, offers some of the lowest prices in the industry
-- up to 30 percent off retail prices. When a consumer's
Medicare discount card is accepted at the drugstore.com™
pharmacy, he or she will automatically receive the
lowest price, whether it is the Medicare discount card
price or the drugstore.com™ everyday low drug price.
Seniors can also use their $30 credit to benefit from
discounts and everyday low prices on nonprescription
items at the drugstore.com™ Web store.
"The Internet has become an important tool for consumers
looking for healthcare information and for seniors
shopping for the best prices on prescription drugs,"
said Peter Neupert, chairman and founder of
drugstore.com, inc. "When searching for the lowest drug
prices, however, seniors should also keep safety in
mind. We encourage seniors shopping online for
prescription drugs to patronize only pharmacies
certified by the National Association of Boards of
Pharmacy's Verified Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS)
program."
