The
Sports Authority
Inc. opened its first store in November 1987 in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1990, with approximately nine
stores in six states, the company was acquired by Kmart.
Five years later, The Sports Authority had expanded to 136
stores in 26 states, and was spun-off from parent Kmart. At
the time of its merger with Gart Sports Company, The Sports
Authority was the largest full-line sporting goods retailer
in the United States, and had 205 stores in 33 states.

Sports Company
Gart Sports Company was established in 1928 in Denver,
Colorado. Through a combination of organic growth and
strategic acquisitions, the company grew to become the
largest full-line sporting goods retailer in the Western
United States. In addition to its Gart Sports locations,
the company operates stores under the Sportmart and
Oshman's brand names, and established a reputation for
providing a comprehensive high-quality assortment of
brand name sporting apparel and equipment at competitive
prices. At the time of the merger with The Sports
Authority, Gart Sports operated 182 stores in 25 states.

Founded in 1995 and comprised of more than 490
mall-based, airport, street level and factory outlet
stores across the United States under the LIDS and
HATWORLD retail brands, Hat World Corporation is the
specialty retail leader of officially licensed and
branded athletic fashion headwear. Hat World Corporation
also operates 15 HATZONE and 2 CAPFACTORY stores in the
US, and 17 CAPCONNECTION stores in Canada. Every shop
offers a vast assortment of college, MLB, NBA, NFL, and
NHL teams, as well as other specialty fashion categories
all in the latest styles and colors. Some locations also
offer a strong complimentary line of licensed apparel,
and custom embroidery. Typically offering more than
1,000 different hats in each store, LIDS and HATWORLD
target the sports fan as well as the fashion-conscious
and trend-savvy mid-teen to mid-20s customer. LIDS and
HATWORLD also sell their products and promote their
stores through the Internet sites lids.com™, and
hatworld.com™, lidscyo.com™, and through a mobile
44-foot "LIDS on the Road" souvenir trailer, which
retails officially licensed event-specific merchandise
at major sporting events. In addition, LIDS licenses
premier street locations and kiosks within major
department stores in Korea, Hong Kong and China. Hat

Modell's
Sporting Goods Under the name
Modell's Sporting Goods, Henry Modell & Company, Inc.
and its affiliates operate over 105 stores throughout
New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut,

in 1889 by Morris A. Modell, had its first store located
on Cortlandt Street in lower Manhattan. Four generations
of the Modell family have developed the family business
into a chain of stores located in all five boroughs of
New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Rockland,
Northern and Central New Jersey, Philadelphia,
Connecticut and Washington DC markets.
